With a population of 87 million, Vietnam has become the second largest country in Southeast Asia. With about 90 % of the population Vietnamese, the country is very homogenous from an ethical standpoint. Even with this large percentage of natives there is a good deal of diversification within the country.

There are more than 50 other different ethnic groups within Vietnam. About 85% of the 7 million of Vietnam's ethnic-minority population belong to indigenous ethnic minorities, whose settlement areas have for many centuries been the mountain regions of Vietnam. The largest groups are Thai and Hmong tribes. There is about 1 million ethnic Chinese living in urban centers in the South of the country.
